What to look for when buying a box for IPTV

Two specifications separate a device that plays everything smoothly from one that stutters. Neither of them is the one usually advertised.

Hardware H.265, and a network port

Those are the two that matter. Hardware HEVC decoding is what lets a device handle a 4K stream without dropping frames; an Ethernet port removes the single most common source of streaming problems in one step.

Advertised RAM and core counts are largely noise by comparison. A box with impressive specifications and no hardware decoder will still stutter on the channels you most want to watch.

How the common devices compare

A mid-range Android TV box or better decodes H.265 in hardware and usually has a network socket — the most flexible all-round choice. The Nvidia Shield does both comfortably and has room to spare on heavy catalogues.

A Fire TV Stick 4K decodes H.265 fine but is Wi-Fi only unless you add an adapter, and Wi-Fi is where most problems begin. Smart TV apps are convenient and the slowest interfaces available, though most televisions do have Ethernet. MAG and Formuler boxes are simple and reliable within their portal model.

The cheapest meaningful upgrade

A cable. It comes up in every discussion of streaming because it is consistently the highest-value change available, and it is boring enough that people keep looking for a more interesting answer.

The 2.4 GHz band is shared with microwaves, Bluetooth devices and every neighbouring network. The interference causes retransmissions, and retransmissions reach your player as jitter. Where a cable genuinely cannot reach, 5 GHz within sight of the router is the next best thing.
